Artificial intelligence has been a hotly debated topic for some time. It can make life easier for us in many ways. It has now taken on such a central role that its development can hardly be stopped. The risks it brings are also often underestimated, such as the fact that one day artificial intelligence may surpass human intelligence. AI technologies are playing an increasingly important role today, especially in an era of ongoing digitalization, across all areas of society. Machines are taking on ever more complex tasks. As you can see, the topic is far more complex than it may sound at first glance. <\/p>\n\n
What does it actually mean to think? Are only we, the \u201chigher beings,\u201d capable of doing so? What about machine learning? Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, is the ability of a computer program to think and learn. You may not be directly aware of it, but we are surrounded by artificial intelligence\u2014whether in large companies or on our smartphones, in apps we use every day. AI is divided into 4 types based on the following capabilities: the ability to perceive the world, self-awareness, remembering the past, and the ability to improve its own learning. The first two capabilities already exist and are used by many of us in everyday life. They are also classified as Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI). Types 3 and 4 are more advanced and fall under Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI). The latter has not yet been created, but it is said to have the potential to be as intelligent as a person\u2014or even smarter. <\/p>\n\n
This is the first and most basic type of AI. Without memory or perception of the world or time, these machines can perform a single task based on the current situation. An example of the AI of a reactive machine is IBM\u2019s chess computer Deep Blue. In 1997, IBM\u2019s computer won a chess match against the reigning world champion Garry Kasparov. Deep Blue was able to consider all possible moves based on the position of the pieces and then find the fastest route to checkmate. However, it cannot be applied to other areas, as this type of AI is designed for only one task. <\/p>\n\n
This type of AI differs from reactive machines in that it is now able to access past data in order to make a decision in a given situation. Robots that work with limited memory must therefore link what they have learned with the observed situation in order to make a judgment. Modern self-driving cars, for example, are based on this system. Based on its memory, the computer knows how cars normally drive, what people and cyclists look like, and which rules apply on the road. At the same time, the car observes its surroundings for obstacles such as cars, trees, or people, which it then links to its existing understanding of the world. This is the most commonly used type of AI today: you can find it as a personal assistant on your smartphone, in Google Search, in Google Translate, in the Facebook feed, and in many other apps you use every day. <\/p>\n\n Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.<\/p>Stephen Hawking, British theoretical physicist and astrophysicist<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n Type 3 machines can perceive and understand human emotions and can adjust their behavior accordingly. Robots with this AI have memory and a model of the world based on what they learn, and they improve independently. In a reality where this applies, robots become part of our society, understanding human feelings and human actions. R2-D2 from Star Wars is a fitting example of a theory-of-mind robot, as it understands people\u2019s fear and anger and reacts with fear or excitement in certain situations. This type of AI still presents many challenges. Researchers are trying to replicate what happens in a human brain and how it works. Social norms, emotions, and instincts are just some of the variables that are very difficult to reproduce in a machine. <\/p>\n\n At this stage, computer thinking reaches the level of human consciousness, with full awareness of the world, human emotions, intentions, and reactions. This AI then develops from \u201cI think\u201d to \u201cI know that I think.\u201d Robots with this AI are just as intelligent as humans\u2014or even more intelligent\u2014and can perform all the usual tasks we do at least as well, if not better. Are we capable of creating something like this? Put differently, should we even be capable of doing so? Would we then have to grant machines the same rights as humans? By creating such an intelligence, we are playing God. Who defines the boundary? Which values, which ethics, would a robot follow? Might they one day be able to take over the world? Technically speaking, a great deal is clearly possible\u2014but whether it is ethically justifiable is another question. <\/p>\n\n AI makes our lives easier in many ways, including in our day-to-day office work.
