In 1988, the first transatlantic fiber optic cable named TAT8<\/strong> was laid between the USA, France, and Great Britain. Installation of Deep-Sea Cables<\/h3>\n\n

Using specialized vessels, the submarine cables are buried in the seabed<\/strong>. There are two different methods<\/a> for this. These installation methods<\/strong> depend on the seabed<\/strong>. If it is sandy, the submarine cable<\/strong> is pressed into<\/strong> the ground, creating drifting sand<\/strong> into which the cables are buried<\/strong>. In the second variant, the seabed is opened<\/strong> using a submarine cable plow<\/strong> and the cable is laid in. The cables are brought ashore through a shaft<\/strong> at the beach. <\/p>\n\n

Global<\/strong> hubs include Marseille<\/strong>, New York<\/strong>, Singapore<\/strong>, and the United Arab Emirates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Submarine Cables as New Attack Surfaces<\/h3>\n\n

Not only from a geopolitical perspective<\/strong> can submarine cables be interpreted as new attack surfaces<\/a><\/strong>. Currently, the USA<\/strong> and the People’s Republic of China<\/strong> are engaged in a competition in the construction of submarine cables. For alongside China’s largest foreign policy project<\/strong>, the construction of the new Silk Road<\/strong>, China also wants to participate in the expansion<\/strong> of submarine cables. <\/p>\n\n

In Marseille<\/strong>, the People’s Republic of China is building the submarine cable “Peace”<\/strong>. The 12,000 km<\/strong> long cable is intended to connect China with Europe via the Horn of Africa and Pakistan. <\/p>\n\n

Critics<\/strong> fear that China<\/strong> is building and financing the deep-sea cable in order to intercept<\/strong> the data<\/strong> of European citizens. This would not<\/strong> be a new phenomenon. In 2013<\/strong>, former CIA agent Edward Snowden<\/strong> revealed that the USA<\/strong> had been intercepting data from governments<\/strong> as well as from millions<\/strong> of people for years by tapping deep-sea cables<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Some time ago, Robert Martinage<\/a>, a former Deputy Undersecretary of the US Navy and Pentagon official, criticized the fact that while many states prioritize cybersecurity, the physical infrastructure of the internet is less protected.<\/p>\n\n

In addition to security risks, submarine cables can also be damaged by natural forces<\/strong> or fall victim to boat anchors<\/strong> and trawl nets<\/strong>. However, this does not<\/strong> directly result in an internet outage<\/strong>, as the data usually reaches its destination<\/strong> via other routes. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Chinese companies<\/strong> such as Huawei<\/strong> are also becoming increasingly active in the construction of submarine cables.
